Pinto lake, Michelle lakes backpack trip.
Start at the Sunset pass trailhead on hwy 93 in Banff Nat. Park
Day 1: Hike to Pinto lake; there is a scrambly shortcut from Sunset pass straight to the west end of Pinto lake.
This route goes through the cliffs down a scree gully and involves an old rope that may or may not be usable.
No fishing allowed at Pinto lake
Camp at Pinto Lake (west shore has good firewood and good water from amazing big springs that feed the lake)
Day 2: hike to Michelle lakes
Cross outlet at east end of Pinto lake and follow faint Trail (maybe flagging or cairns) up ridgeline.
Some routefinding and a topo map should get you across some beautiful high country to Michelle lakes.
Camp and fish at Michelle lakes
Day 3: Hike out, down Owen Creek to hwy 11.
head up to unamed pass south of upper Michelle lake then down Owen creek.
Why I do this trip in this direction:
1) The trail up Owen creek is steep, long and technical; I would rather do it downhill on last day of trip (lighter pack)
2) Hitching on hwy 11 is more productive than on hwy 93
3) the old rope in the shortcut: if you are hoping to use it to go up and it's not working it will add 2-3 hrs to go back to
regular trail which leaves east end of Pinto Lake (the rope will be under snow until July some years).
